Following The Straits Times' 5 November 2011 article on the winding down of SSD, SADeaf has communicated with and is seeking to work with the authorities on the following points:
  • SSD be allowed to continue to restructure / reinvent itself to address future challenges.

  • SSD to run satellite Total Communication classes in mainstream schools.

  • SSD be allowed to enrol deaf students at any level.

  • More support from Itinerant Support Services for deaf students in mainstream schools.
Advocacy issues
SADeaf will continue to advocate for the following :
  • Seek more supporting evidence to put up a stronger case for provision of note takers / interpreters for deaf students at junior colleges and tertiary institutions.

  • Advocate for equal employment opportunities for the Deaf and provision of interpreters for upgrading courses.

  • Accessibility / Communication issues such as installation of induction loops for hearing devices and enhancement of visual announcements in public places.

  • Affordability in the purchase / maintenance of costly hearing devices including the use of Medisave.

  • Awareness programme for young people as leisure noise-induced hearing loss is becoming more prevalent.
Establishment of Advocacy Committee
SADeaf has recently established an Advocacy Committee on deaf needs.

The Committee is tasked to establish a mini-enabling master plan for the Deaf, targeted for completion and presentation to the government / relevant authorities by mid-2012 so that the recommendations can be considered for incorporation into the framework of the government's general Enabling Master Plan.

The Committee welcomes members' feedback and views on deaf needs. The Committee will comprise a diverse range of members: Deaf and hearing-impaired clients/members, parents of deaf children, professsionals in the medical and educational field, and from other Deaf-related organisations.

Please send in your feedback and views to  Mr Lam Chee Keong, Senior Manager via email: lam_chee_keong@sadeaf.org.sg or SMS 93266306.
